Twenty-four sailors and a dog took part in the official launch of a new dinghy trail on Ullswater last month. (18.8.21) A series of dinghy trails for sailors at venues all over the country has been produced by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). The idea is to encourage sailors to explore inland waters and the coast by cruising in their dinghies. The first RYA Dinghy Trail, which was published earlier this year, is based on Ullswater and Ullswater Yacht Club Sailing Manager Edmund Clarke used his knowledge of the lake to work on it with the RYA. "We were delighted to be chosen as the first venue for the Dinghy Trails," said Edmund. "Ullswater is an ideal place to go cruising and for sailors to have their own adventures on the lake in their dinghies."
On August 18, 24 enthusiastic sailors of all abilities and a dog from across the region set off in their boats from Ullswater Yacht Club to officially launch the trail, supported by a team from the North West RYA. They included UYC members Jonathan and Anita Dorey and their two children Reuben and Ari, pictured. In a range of different dinghies, they cruised together the full length of the seven-mile lake to Glenridding at the Southern end, stopping at Silver Bay for a picnic lunch, sailing back to the club for a barbecue.
"This is a fantastic low-cost way of using your dinghy with family and friends and whilst exploring our beautiful coastline and inland waters. Dinghies aren't just about racing, it's about discovering the great outdoors," explained RYA Programmes Manager Michelle Gent.
Each trail comes with its own map and instructions including distance, safety, sailing times and launch sites. They are also packed with information, details of navigation or anchorage, who-knew-that facts, insider visits, wildlife spotting, and stellar views or best picnic spots.
