The International 14 sailed by Adam Ovington and Stuart Keegan win the 62 nd Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy at Ullswater Yacht Club on July 6 & 7.

The iconic long-distance event was established by the club in honour of Lord Norman Birkett who died in 1962, two days after making a successful speech in the House of Lords preventing Ullswater from becoming a reservoir which would have restricted public access. It has become more than just a race but a Festival of Sailing attracting entries in a wide range of different dinghies, keelboats and cruisers from all over the country.

The Commodore, Kathryn Hall, welcomed 207 entries to the 62 nd Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy from the race box balcony. The Race Officer set a course for Norfolk Island and back to Pooley Bridge, before finishing in front of the club. The fleet massed for a single start at 1pm, only to be brought back under a general recall twice. Only on the third start under a black flag did the fleet get away cleanly, with only one boat being disqualified.

Sunday brought more temperamental wind, with a postponement required due a change in the win direction before the start. The fleet were called back under a general recall, but all got away cleanly on a second time of asking under a black flag, with no infringements.

The safety crews did an exceptional job over the six-mile course, aiding a number of competitors over the weekend.

The weekend's main sponsors were Magic Marine who presented a number of Vouchers to winners. Also supporting the event were Ullswater Steamers and Dalemain Estates. The event supported the Great North Air Ambulance.

The club thanks all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the 62 nd Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy possible. And a huge thank you goes to every sailor who took part in the racing - you all make the Birkett such an amazing event.
