Club Training 2020 dates
UYC is a recognised RYA Training Centre, this means we run courses throughout the year in accordance with the RYA schemes. All our instructors are fully qualified and are usually volunteers from within the club. Whether you are just starting out or wanting to develop your current skills, there will be a programme to suit you.
Training for UYC members 2020
First-aid course: 7th March
RYA OnBoard Instructor Development Day: 19th April
Training Weekend: 16th & 17th May This is for beginners all the way up to 'start racing' and 'double handers'.
Discover Sailing: 23rd May, 1-4pm Part of the RYA's series of sailing taster sessions.
Spring Training: 30th May, 6th, 13th, 20th June This is for beginners all the way up to 'start racing' and 'double handers'.
Instructor Keelboat Endorsement: 11th - 14th July
Dinghy Instructor course: 13th-17th July
Sail Camp: 27th- 31st July For 8-14 year olds, beginners all the way up to 'start racing' and 'double handers'.
Autumn Training: 5th, 12th, 19th Sep, 3rd Oct This is for beginners all the way up to 'start racing' and 'double handers'.
Powerboat Level Two Course: Date TBC
Coaching Saturdays: 18th April, 9th May, 23 May, 27th June, 11th July, 18th July, 1st Aug, 29th Aug.
Ladies Who Launch - Calling all ladies who want to get on the water (or drink coffee depending on the weather). Ladies Who Launch meet at 9.30am so we can decide what to do and be ready for 10am e.g. sail, power boat or drink coffee and chat.
Blokes in Boats - Come and join us for friendly coaching on the water. You know you want to. There's no sign up or structure and we'll decide on the day what to do. Just turn up at the club at 10am.
Youth & Junior Race Training - Friendly race coaching for all youth and junior members, briefing at 9.30am and on the water 10am to noon.
Family Week Courses: These are open to club members and visitors
RYA Level One - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 10th-12th August.
RYA Level Two - Thursday and Friday, 13th & 14th August.
RYA Level One and Two 10th -14th August.
If you book more than one person on the course there is a 10% discount. Club members get a 20% discount on all courses.
Adult Training (age 16+) 2 Day courses following the RYA Adult Scheme:
* Level 1 Start Sailing an introduction to the sport covering the minimum knowledge to get afloat and sail under supervision in light winds.
* Level 2 Basic Skills Covering the foundations of the sport and enabling you to sail independently in good conditions.
* Level 3 Better Sailing Consolidating skills learnt in levels 1 and 2, and introducing some new skills from the advanced modules.
Junior Training (age 7-16) 2 Day courses following the RYA Junior Scheme:
* Stage 1 A basic understanding of how a boat sails with some experience of handling a boat under supervision.
* Stage 2 Developing a range of sailing skills and knowledge and becoming well on the way to being a confident sailor.
* Stage 3 Rigging, launching and being able to sail in any direction independently in moderate conditions.
* Stage 4 Developing the skills to sail a double-handed boat
Advanced Modules Both for adults and juniors upon completion of the above (Stage 4 optional):
* Seamanship Skills
* Sailing with spinnakers
* Start Racing
* Performance Sailing
Dinghy Instructor Training
A five-day course for competent sailors, with current first aid and powerboat level 2, who would like to inspire others and promote the sport of sailing.
Powerboat Level 2 These are 2 day courses to help you gain essential skills in handling powerboats. These skills can be utilised when on safety duty. You can also book on for a direct assessment if you an experienced powerboater.
First Aid A one-day nationally recognised course with a bias towards water sports.
