Youth & Juniors

1171303 orig

The aim of the Junior fleet is to have fun on the water whilst developing sailing skills and competence. Ullswater Yacht Club has a fantastic team feel and members work together to ensure that the youngsters get the most out of their sailing experience. Lifelong friendships are made on and off the water which makes their journey even more special. Many of our youths progress on to becoming Assistant Instructors and Dinghy Instructors once they have fine-tuned their sailing and racing skills. They can also be guided through the various pathways to competitive racing should they choose to progress this way. Juniors are classed as being under 15 on 1st Jan, 2023, and Youths under 18 on the 1st Jan, 2023.

The 2023 Season at UYC - Read all about it
Everything you need to know about Youth & Junior Sailing in 2023 is in a newsletter produced by Y&J rep Jane Warner. It's packed full of details about what is on offer in 2023 for our young sailors.
New for 2023 is a Saturday Club being held at the club from 4-6pm on May 13 and 20, and there'll be Fun Days for all on Sundays May 21, August 30, September 10 and 30. The 21-page newsletter covers what's on at the club aimed at youngsters, from those new to sailing to accomplished racers, as well as events taking place throughout the North-West. There's a look back at all the fun of Sail Camp 2022 with some great pictures and even artwork from junior members. It's essential reading for under 18s and their families.
The 2023 Y&J Activity Newsletter is available to download below.

Training

Ullswater Yacht Club is an RYA recognised training centre and run courses in accordance with the RYA schemes. All instructors are volunteers and are RYA qualified instructors in their particular discipline. The Youth sailing scheme offers four stages of training:
Stage 1 - An introduction to sailing
Stage 2 - To be able to sail under supervision
Stage 3 - Sailing without supervision, a competent sailor in moderate winds.
Stage 4 - All the skills to sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm
Training is for members only and is great if you or your children (from 8 years old) want to learn to sail. Instructors give their time freely to help us keep the costs down for you.

If you or your child don't have your own boat, Ullswater Sailing School has a range of boats you can hire for the duration of the course. If your children are joining a course we require at least one parent of guardian to stay on site at all times, but they can also join their own training session.

Junior training dates for 2023:
Junior training weekend - 29 & 30 April, 10am to 4pm. Cost £50 per person.
Junior Saturday morning Spring training - 3, 10, 17, 24 June, 10am to 12pm. Cost £50 per person.
Junior Saturday morning Autumn training 1, 9, 16, 23 September, 10am to 12pm. Cost £50 per person.

Sail Camp 23 to 28 July, 2023
The annual Sail Camp is run entirely by volunteers and offers five days of sailing under the instruction of qualified RYA instructors and club racing coaches. Sail Camp is open to young club members aged 8 to 14. It's fun and a great place to make friends.

Which boat?
Our young sailors mainly start out in Toppers or RS Teras. Some very young sailors may start in Optimists first to gain more confidence with less sail area. Speak to the Sailing Manager or Youth & Junior Representative if you want to discuss options in greater depth.

Racing
Our Youth & Junior fleet have their own race series with two back-to-back races on each date. They have their own start signal at 13:06 on various Saturdays throughout the year. Its friendly but competitive.

Leisure Sailing
Ullswater offers so much adventure opportunity and whilst leisure activities will be planned throughout the year such as games, ice cream voyages and picnics to pirate bay, once you are competent and confident then get out there and explore the lake and create magic memories.
