It is with great sadness that I share the news that our lovely friend and fellow member, Fiona Gibson, aged 57, died peacefully at home on Wednesday 27 th January with husband Paul and sons Will and Toby at her side.
As some of you may know, Fiona was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, but for Fiona this was no barrier to living life to the full. Already a keen cyclist, fell walker and horsewoman, Fiona learnt to sail after attending a club open day and subsequently became the first pupil of Ullswater Sailing School in 2013. Having fallen in love with sailing and UYC she went on to join the club with Paul and Toby. A regular at the Ladies Who Launch sessions, her drive and enthusiasm not only inspired and encouraged others but meant that she progressed rapidly and was soon racing her Laser.
She fully embraced UYC life, helping organise Holiday Week and being a willing crew for anyone who needed an extra pair of hands, chalking up lots of crewing experience in the process. When she could no longer manage dinghy sailing, her passion for being out on the water undiminished, she moved on to cruiser sailing, teaming up with Sue Harding and Joe Pester in Roxy Lady. She touched many lives with her infectious enthusiasm and love of life and she will be greatly missed.
There will be a private funeral service on Wednesday 10 th February at Carlisle Crematorium. The family have requested Family flowers only. Donations if desired can be sent directly to Eden Valley Hospice or Hospice at Home.
