At Ullswater Yacht Club (UYC), the true engine behind its success is not just the stunning lake setting or the sailing camaraderie, it is the people. More specifically, it is the dedicated community of member volunteers whose time, skill, and commitment underpin nearly every aspect of club life.

From launching operations to maintenance, events to governance, volunteering at UYC is not simply a contribution - it is a defining feature of the club's identity and a powerful reflection of its community spirit.

Jack Allan, General Manager of UYC is clear about the impact this has:

"I'm in awe daily of our exceptional volunteers at UYC. The support these members give to the club, our small team of staff and I is nothing short of incredible. UYC would not be what it is without them."

A recent Monday morning (13th April) offered a perfect snapshot of this in action. While cruiser launching operations ran seamlessly supported by an experienced team of member volunteers working throughout the week another group, the ever-reliable Monday Club, was hard at work across the site tackling essential jobs.

Although a single photograph might capture only a fraction of those involved, it represents something much bigger: a thriving, engaged community built on generosity, shared ownership, and pride in the club.

"I'd like to give a huge shoutout to the incredible impact of volunteering at UYC," Jack Allan added. "Whether you're supporting racing and events, training, hospitality, open days, board and committee work, or simply lending a hand where it's needed your time and effort truly makes a difference to our community."

At the heart of this volunteering culture sits the Monday Club. Established in 1986 by then manager Bill Powton and long-standing member Tom Ball, the group began as a small initiative to keep the club in good order. Over the decades, it has grown into a cornerstone of UYC life and community.

Meeting weekly throughout the year, the Monday Club carries out a wide range of maintenance and improvement projects, ensuring the clubhouse and grounds remain in excellent condition. Their work is particularly vital through the winter months, helping prepare the club for the sailing season ahead.

But their contribution goes beyond practical tasks. By reducing maintenance costs and supporting ongoing improvements, they play a meaningful role in enabling the club to reinvest in its future. Just as importantly, they embody the strong sense of community that makes UYC unique.

For many, the social aspect is just as valuable as the work itself.

"The Monday Club is a highlight of my week," said member Alice McBride. "I'm a new member, and newcomer in both Cumbria and the UK, and this group was warmly welcoming right from the start. Whatever the day's task, whether clearing leaves or tackling brambles, it comes with worthwhile conversation and good cheer, not to mention cake."

It is this blend of purpose and camaraderie that continues to attract members and sustain the club's volunteer ethos.

As Ullswater Yacht Club looks ahead to another busy sailing season, one thing remains clear: its strength lies in its people and the community they create together.

"There are far too many volunteers to fit into one frame," Jack Allan reflected, "but together they represent everything that makes this club so special."

With sails set for the season ahead, UYC does so powered not just by wind and water but by an extraordinary community spirit.
