Nation's Biggest Sports Day, August 24, 2019

Ullswater Yacht Club celebrated the Nation's Biggest Sports Day on Saturday, August 24, by taking more than 100 visitors for a sail on the lake.

The afternoon of free sailing taster sessions was part of I am Team GB Day, a national campaign to encourage more people to be active. There were hundreds of free activities across the country put on volunteers, known as I Am Team GB Games Makers.

UYC's Games Maker, Sue Giles said: "The weather was ideal, bright sunshine and a slight breeze and we were delighted to welcome a total of 103 visitors, of all ages from two upwards, to have a go at sailing. They went afloat in family groups in dinghies from Ullswater Sailing School under the expert guidance of qualified Royal Yachting Association sailing instructors. The 'new sailors' were a mixture of locals from Cumbria and families on holiday in the area from all over the country. The visitors enjoyed spending the afternoon at the club in the sun and many of the youngsters enjoyed cooling off by playing in the lake after their sail.
