Ullswater Yacht Club's young sailors took part in their own racing regatta on Saturday, September 21. The eight youngsters competed in their single-handed Toppers in a very difficult South-easterly wind with some big gusts mixed in to keep them on their toes. After three races, ten-year-old Spirit Alderson was first overall, Sophie Potter second and Sarah Featherstone third.
The club is keen to encourage its junior members and a coaching programme run by a team of volunteer instructors is held throughout the season. The mini-regatta was run as part of their ongoing development and race training. The regatta was a good warm-up for the budding racers who will be taking part in the British Youth Sailing (BYS) Regional Junior Championships being held at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, near Consett, this weekend, September 28 and 29. The club hosted the inaugural BYS event in 2018 and it was a great success with more than 160 boats from all over the region taking part. Over the weekend a total of 12 young club sailors will be flying the flag for UYC at Derwent. The entry for the event is more than 110 boats with helms under 14 racing in several different categories from beginners to experienced sailors.
