A sunny start

It was a sunny start to the 2019 racing season at Ullswater Yacht Club on the weekend of March 30 and 31 with a total of 13 boats taking part in five races over two days.
The club opened officially on Saturday, March 23 with the first race, traditionally the Spring Noggin handicap event, scheduled for Sunday, March 24. But strong winds led to its cancellation. So the first races of the season were 1-5 of the Tom Ball series, all class handicap racing which will be held until Easter.
The series is for all classes of boats, starting at the same time and racing against each other on a handicap basis. Those taking part ranged from the single-handed Laser Radial to the high performance, twin-trapeze International 14, with the biggest fleet, four VXOnes. The sun shone all weekend with light winds from the South-west on Saturday and the more tricky Easterly direction on Sunday. Winners on handicap were: Phil Noak, Laser; Steve King and team, VXOne; Keith Lockey and team, VXOne; John Lyons, Laser; Jon and Nicola Abbatt, RS400.
