Family Week, August 10-14

From Charlie Thornton, UYC Leisure Director

A huge thank you to all who made UYC's Family Week possible this year. It was a very special time for UYC members to gather and enjoy each other's company and the chance to get out and enjoy all that Ullswater has to offer. New friendships have been formed, water skills have been improved and everyone has hopefully left with many happy memories of their time together.

Despite having an incredible night of thunder and lightning at the start of the week (which everyone survived) the week's weather was in the main very warm and sunny. This provided a pleasant back drop for a range of informal activities to take place. From code-breaking treasure hunts, marshmallows bananas and pastries on the front lawn (many thanks to Jane Warner the ideas and making them a reality) to a fish and chip night before the Twilight Race, members had the freedom to join in as much or as little as they wanted to.

We also saw a number of informal leisure sails take place - to Howtown, Gale Bay and Norfolk Island. On each occasion we were indebted to our volunteer PB2 team, Martin Golden, Sally Coleman and Paul and Sue Austen, who between them very kindly provided tow-back cover. Every informal leisure sail was memorable in different ways - from the tow-backs offered to Toppers when the wind ceased, to the amazing wall-to-wall sunshine experienced on the sail down to Norfolk Island.

At the heart of any event like this is the people who attend. Whether you joined us for a day or so or stayed for the whole week, I hope you really enjoyed the spirit of Family Week and the opportunity to have been part of something special.

I have received some great feedback on the week from members - here is just a selection:

"It was a great week - the kids and ourselves had a great time."

"Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone for sharing the most amazing week with us. We have made some lifelong happy memories this week."

"Everyone has really enjoyed the week - the adventure to Silver Bay and Norfolk Island was a superb climax to the week."

It would be good to see Family Week and other leisure related activities grow and develop at UYC so that even more people, members and non-members, can enjoy all that the club can offer. I would be delighted to hear from you if you have ideas for how this area can be developed.

I am also hoping to organise some more leisure sail opportunities in the autumn - watch this space for details. Please contact me with your ideas, Charlie, uycleisuresailing@gmail.com

There are two albums of pictures from the week in the gallery on this website - 1. 'Family Week 2020 from the air' - amazing drone pictures from Edmund Clarke and 2. 'Family Week 2020 on the ground' - photos taken by members who were there. Here are the links:
