Team UYC fundraising

Ullswater Yacht Club's junior members are aiming to be fastest sailors on the water and the best dressed team on the shore. The enthusiastic youngsters have been busy raising money to buy themselves team jackets. They came up with the idea to work together to raise more than £2,500 to buy the jackets, which have the club Pegasus logo on the front and 'Team UYC' on the back.
The club is hosting a prestigious RYA (Royal Yachting Association) event, the RYA Regional Junior Championships next month as well as the RYA Youth and Junior Travellers Series which will attract more than 100 entrants from across the area. They have worked hard to raise the money to have their jackets in time for both events.
The keen young sailors travel around the country to compete at other clubs in regional, national and, this year, international level and they will wear their jackets and represent their club with pride.
Jane Warner, UYC Youth and Junior Representative, said: "We have a fantastic group of kids and young adults at the moment who are so enthusiastic about being on the water and having fun with their friends whilst fine tuning their sailing and racing skills at the same time.
"They look up to the GBR team and see how professional and united they appear in their kit and they too wanted to look and feel like a uniformed team. It also helps with psyching out the opposition before even getting on the water!"
The team of under 16s baked and sold cakes and home-made crafts, held a raffle and took part in a 12-hour sponsored sail. They worked in relay to keep a boat sailing on Ullswater for 12 hours between 7am and 7pm on Saturday, April 30, and achieved their fundraising goal.
The new team jackets had their first outing when a group of the youngsters travelled to Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club near Manchester, on Saturday, May 14, for an RYA NW Youth & Junior Travellers Event. They came away with plenty of prizes for their sailing and praise for their smart new team kit.
