New UYC President John Robinson

When the Commodore asked me to consider taking on the role of Club President I was, to say the least, surprised. There are some big shoes to fill here - my predecessors have set the bar high for me to follow. I do not need to dwell on their impressive legacies, other than to say that they all loved the Club and all that it stands for and contributed greatly to its continuing success over the years. I hope to continue this tradition.
I first visited Ullswater Yacht Club in 1975 after moving to Cumbria and liked what I encountered - a welcoming and inclusive club, with a good racing scene, situated in a superb location. I joined as soon as I could. 45 years later, I am still here with my sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren all as active members. That says it all.
The position of President is as a non-voting officer, who can provide an element of continuity and guidance for the Board and Officers if and when needed. This is why the position has historically been given to long-standing members of the club, with experience of the management committee/board. The post of President is no longer a lifetime appointment and I fully support this, as it will ensure that the post be filled by someone who remains active and focused on the club and its activities. Whilst I have no intention of becoming unable to fulfil the role anytime soon, it is important that the baton can be passed on smoothly when the time comes.
At this time we are in a national (and international) health crisis, and it is not possible to make any realistic predictions for the future. However we do need a post-Covid recovery strategy, and I am sure that the current and new Board will be on to this. I will support their efforts and I have no doubt that our members also will. We need to make this club even more attractive to new members as well as retaining the UYC magic for existing members.
I will sign off with a huge 'Thank You' to our former presidents, Robin Barratt , Derek Burgoyne, Alec Snaith and John Farrer for their support and dedication to the Club, to the Board for offering me this honour, and to all the members, past and present, for supporting and participating in the activities of this wonderful club and making it what it is today.
