Death of founder member Dr Ian Miller
Published 08:27 on 12 Jun 2019
Ian Miller was 96 and, as a founder member of UYC, his membership number was 2. For many years Ian and his wife Nora and their two sons were enthusiastic family members of the club. Ian, crewed by Nora, was a successful Albacore competitor in the days when Albacores had metal centreboards!. In addition to being an enthusiastic sailor, Ian was a keen fell walker and when not sailing spent many holidays in the mountains.
When the Howtown Activity Centre opened, a doctor was needed and enquires suggested that Dr Miller, as both a sailor and hill walker, was the man for the job. We became firm friends and enjoyed family holidays together. Ian practised what he preached and was running five miles a day well into his eighties.
Ian's funeral is at Carlisle Crematorium on Monday, June 17 at 11.40am, then at the Roundthorn Hotel, Penrith.
