Nippers Nip, October 19
Published 13:25 on 24 Oct 2019
Ullswater Yacht Club's junior sailors marked the end of their sailing season on Saturday, October 19, with the traditional annual 'Nippers Nip' races followed by a prizegiving and a social.
With 15 helms taking to the water on a grey day, competition was serious with silverware at stake. Spirit Alderson and Violet Simpson led the fleet in their double-handed RS 200 but the handicap was always going to be a challenge. On handicap, Topper sailor Josh Hunter took the first race but couldn't maintain the pressure with Rose Jury and Freya Wilson, also in Toppers, pressing hard. Ultimately it was Rose who took top spot with two second places followed by Josh and then Freya.
At the prizegiving lots of congratulations were given to all the youngsters for the progress they have made over the last two years. Trophy winners were:
Youth and Juniors Race Series - Rose Jury, Topper
Youth and Juniors Regatta - Spirit Alderson, Topper
Endeavour Trophy - Sarah Featherstone, Topper
Series winner Rose Jury has had a very successful 2019. After three selection events she has been invited to join the North West Topper Zone Squad. Massive well done to Rose and great to see UYC represented at this level. Everyone agreed it had been an excellent year for the youngsters at UYC and they are already looking forward to 2020 when they will again receive regular training from volunteer coaches.
