Job Vacancies at UYC

Bosun (Part-Time, Seasonal)

Ullswater Yacht Club is one of the premier sailing clubs in the North of England, offering an extensive programme of racing, training and recreational sailing from March through to December.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, practical and well-organised Bosun to play a key role in supporting the safe and efficient delivery of our on-the-water activities. Working alongside our dedicated volunteers, instructors and race officials, you will help ensure members and visitors enjoy a first-class sailing experience.

The Role

As Bosun, you will be responsible for preparing, maintaining and overseeing the club's safety boat fleet and launching equipment, ensuring everything is ready for racing, training and other organised club activities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and maintaining safety boats, engines, trailers and launching equipment.
  • Ensuring all water safety arrangements are in place before organised club activities.
  • Acting as the club's designated Water Safety Lead during Wednesday evening racing and weekend events, unless another person has been appointed.
  • Supporting Race Officers, the Race Box team, instructors, volunteers and members to ensure activities are delivered safely and efficiently.
  • Identifying maintenance requirements and helping keep club equipment in excellent working order.
  • Assisting with the general organisation of the boat park and waterfront areas where required.

About You

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working within a sailing club, watersports centre or RYA training environment.
  • Has a good practical and technical understanding of boats, engines and sailing equipment.
  • Is organised, reliable and able to plan ahead while remaining flexible when priorities change.
  • Enjoys working with volunteers and club members of all ages and abilities.
  • Is proactive, takes pride in maintaining high standards and has a strong focus on safety.

Relevant RYA Powerboat or Safety Boat qualifications would be an advantage, although training may be available for the right candidate.

Working Arrangements

The Bosun reports to the General Manager and works closely with the Sailing Secretary, instructors and volunteer teams.

This is a part-time, seasonal position, requiring regular mid-week and weekend working during the sailing season (March to December). During the winter months there are limited duties relating to maintenance and preparation for the following season.

The role can be offered either on a self-employed contractor basis or as a part-time employee, depending on the successful candidate.
