The seventh race in the 13-race POETS series was held at Ullswater Yacht Club on Friday, July 8.
There was bright sunshine and plenty of wind throughout and shorts were the order of the day. The course was Club-Brunskill-Bonscale-Sharrow-Harbour-Waterside-Club, 2 laps. Owing to the very gusty conditions some of the competitors at the back of the fleet only managed one lap before retiring, their time for one lap being doubled to give a finishing result. The course turned very much into a procession and there was little change in the relative positions of the boats after the start. Colin Brown and David Kitchen in a Beneteau 21 started at the front and again recorded the fastest time on the water. Their high handicap now means that they have to try even harder to achieve a good finishing place.
The winner on handicap was the Ruffian steered for the first time this year by Penrith's Parry Coates with Barrie Cheetham and Wayne Gorrie as crew. The conditions were perfect for this boat built as it was for heavy weather. A creditable second place went to Kevin Parr and Alan Percy also racing for the first time this year in an Etap 21 called Final Fling!
We are now over halfway through the 13 race series, the best six results counting as the final score so the competition now hots up as the leaders drop some of their worst results.
Results after handicap calculations: 1st Parry Coates, 2nd Keith Parr, 3rd Colin Brown.
