Island Race, July 29

The POETS sail racing series continued at Ullswater Yacht Club on Friday, July 29, with a race the length of the lake to Norfolk Island and back. A reasonable amount of wind and some sunshine encouraged a good turnout of eight boats.
As usual, Colin Brown and David Kitchen got away at the front closely followed by Steve and Jane King in their Seascape. These two tussled their way up the lake, the much faster Seascape gradually pulling ahead. Keith Hyde in his Parker 21 picked a good course through the windshifts and was next to the island followed by Parry Coates and Barry Cheetham in their Ruffian and David Hansford and Derek Pierce in a Pegasus.
The remaining three boats, John Easterby and Richard Sealby, Jaguar 21, Raymond Harle and John Wales, Hunter, and Gordon and Cathy Gledson sailing a Sadler 25, a boat much more suited to the open sea, then benefited from a sudden breeze that seemed to come from nowhere and came dashing up to David and Keith who by this time were having their own private battle.
One of the reasons the POETS series is so popular in the club is that the handicapping system encourages all types of craft to take part - the last can be first. The leading two boats were back on their moorings when the back markers completed the course and yet these three finished in the top spots.
Results: 1st John Easterby, 2nd Raymond Harle, 3rd Gordon Gledson.
- David Hansford
