Seven boats came to the start line for the first POETS (Push off Tomorrow's Saturday) Friday afternoon race series for cruising yachts at Ullswater Yacht Club. The forecast was for light fluky winds and so it turned out.
The two-lap course was Club-FloshgateWaterside-Thwaite-Club to make the most of the winds on the eastern side of the lake. During the first lap the fleet stretched out led by Sue Harding's Sonata but at the club for the first time nearly everyone was back together again which made for some interesting mark rounding for the shore-based audience.
By the end of the racing, the Sonata was so far ahead that she was back on her mooring before the next boat crossed the line. Shap couple Liz Amos and Harry Patrick in their Etap, which was carrying a new furling jib, finished with the second best time on the water and after handicap calculations they were worthy winners of the race. This was Liz's first win since 2016 so many congratulations.
Results: 1st Liz Amos; 2nd Sue Harding; 3rd Mike and Sue Smith.
