Before the POETS race on Friday, June 25, at Ullswater Yacht Club even started, things were not looking too good. Some might say a typical June day, cold and rainy with uncertain wind gusts. Only 5 boats turned up and by now the competitors were so used to postponements due to the weather that a vote was taken to decide if racing would actually take place!
Rather than face a wasted journey to the lake, the decision was taken to go ahead. The course was two laps from the club to Floshgate then Harbour, Bonscale and back. It may have been the unusually democratic decision to go ahead that prompted four of the five boats to sail the wrong course - one boat missed Harbour on the first leg and had to go back and then the leading boat, followed by two others, turned to return to the club at Brunskill rather than at Bonscale, some three quarters of a mile further on. Only David Hansford and Derek Pierce in their Pegasus kept to the correct course and were therefore able to make up for a poor start by leading the fleet for a while.
The race then turned into a procession and only Colin Brown, crewed by Wayne Gorrie in a Beneteau21, made up the deficit to finish first on the water with David Hansford second. After handicap calculations the results were: 1st Colin Brown 2nd Raymond Harle and John Wales (Hunter) 3rd David Hansford.
