Two POETS races were again held at Ullswater Yacht Club on Friday, June 18 to enable competitors to complete the 13 race series by the end of the season as an earlier race had been abandoned owing to insufficient wind. Each race which was set to last about an hour which meant a long afternoon on the water for the club's senior sailors.
The first race was from the club line north to Harbour, then Eusemere, Waterside, Brunskill, (by Castlehows Point) and back to the club. After the storms of the previous week, winds returned to more balmy conditions and the boats separated and joined together again as the breeze altered over the course. By Waterside everyone was together. When the fleet reached the area, the Waterside mark was not to be seen and the course was altered to go to Bay where, owing again to lack of wind, the race was halted and times taken to that point. Results: Sam Harding sailing alone in her Hunter was 1st, John Easterby and Richard Sealby, (Pegasus) 2nd, Liz Amos and Harry Patrick (Etap) 3rd.
The second race took place on the southern part of the lake - to Bay, Beauthorn, Ravencragg and then the Club. Two laps had been set but once more the wind lessened and race was limited to only one circuit. Results: Colin Brown (Beneteau) 1st, Raymond Harle and John Wales (Hunter) 2nd, Jo Laycock (Sun Fast 20) 3rd.
