Beautiful sailing conditions greeted the 11 starters in the Ullswater Yacht Club POETS race held on July 23. The course was Club Waterside Lodge Beauthorn - Bonscale Club, two laps. Liz Amos and Harry Patrick in their Etap had a good start, closely followed by the rest of the fleet, anxious to get going before the wind faded. The boats remained together at Waterside and Lodge but on the long run down to Beauthorn, 2021 Masters champions David Hansford and Derek Pierce in their Pegasus, Kingfisher, with Brian Moreton in his Kite, Ruby, gradually pulled away from the others. These two competitors chased each other round the course until on the final leg back to the Club, Kingfisher, by sailing closer to the wind, got in front of Ruby and eventually finished a minute ahead. The Sonata, Roxy Lady, crewed by Sue Harding and Steve Libby then came dashing up to the line on a freshening breeze and although behind the first two boats on the water she recorded a faster time as she had started later in the 10 minute starting window. This was a fine performance as she had suffered penalties earlier in the race for a minor rule infringement.
Keith Hyde and Steve Jury, Parker 21 and Colin Brown, Beneteau were also close behind. There was then a significant gap between them and the rest of the fleet.
Results: 1st Sue Harding and Steve Libby, Sonata, 2nd David Hansford and Derek Pierce, Pegasus, 3rd Brian Moreton, Kite.~
