Course Duration Minimum 2 days or spread over 16 hours
The Level 1 course takes a minimum of two days to cover but we often find that people enjoy taking 3 days to help to absorb the content and consolidate their learning. You could combine levels 1 and 2 in a 5-day programme

Course Description
If you have just decided that you would like to learn how to sail, or if you have been thinking of how to get out on the water for a while, this is the ideal course for you. Here at Ullswater Sailing School we offer everything you need to get afloat in a wonderful scenic and safe environment. This RYA Level 1 course is aimed at beginners and is a great introduction to the sport of sailing. The course will be taught by our professional RYA instructors in a friendly and practical manner.
The course will cover:
Wind awareness
Sail controls and parts of the boat
Rigging the boat
Knots and ropework
Sailing in all directions
Turning the boat
Controlling speed and stopping
Launching and recovery
Awareness of other water users
Clothing and equipment
Weather
Capsize recovery
On completion of the Level 1 course, you will be able to sail in all directions in light winds under supervision and be able to launch and recover a dinghy
Next Steps:
When you feel ready to learn some more then you can book onto our Level 2 Basic Skills course. This will build on your Level 1 skills and knowledge and move you towards more independent sailing. Your instructor can give you more information about this and other courses. FAQs
What knowledge of sailing do I need to have to do this course?
None, just great enthusiasm
What do I need to bring?
We recommend that you bring a towel, swimming costume, trainers/wet boots and hat and gloves (dependent on the weather you may need sun glasses!) however, just in case, bring along warm clothing, ie a quick drying fleece and layers. You will also need to bring refreshments, water etc.
Do I need to be able to swim?
You need to be confident in the water, you will be wearing a buoyancy aid. There is no minimum swimming ability requirement.
What is the duration of the course?
The course is run over 2 days normally, but this can depend on you and your availability
Is there an age limit?
No minimum or maximum age, this course can be adapted to fit all ages/families.
What's included in the course fee?
Instruction by Royal Yachting Association qualified instructor/s.Maximum group size of 6. Sailing protective clothing and safety equipment
If I book more than one onto a course can I get a discount?
Yes, we discount our courses when you book more than one person onto them.
What will I be able to do after completing the RYA Level 1?
You will be able to sail in light winds under supervision

Is there parking on site?
At UYC we have plenty of parking on site, simply turn up, park and ask for the Sailing Manager. He will welcome you and show you where to change etc
Will I be awarded a certificate after the course?
On completing all the requirements of the course successfully, you will be awarded the RYA Level 1: Start Sailing Certificate
