Nine boats and crews turned up for the 11th race in the POETS Friday afternoon sailing series for cruisers and day-boats at Ullswater Yacht Club. Owing to the yet again anticipated light winds at the start, the course was a conservative 2 laps: Club, Harbour, Eusemere, Lodge, and Club. Virtually no tacking was needed as the fleet could sail just off close hauled around the entire course, the skill was in picking the fastest wind through which to sail and efficient sail setting. David Hansford and Derek Pierce in a Pegasus, Sue Harding and Steve Libby in a Sonata and Colin Brown with Martin Golding in a Beneteau got away first and David held on to this lead for the entire race.
After these boats started, a wind shift and a strengthening breeze enabled John Easterby and Richard Sealby in their Pegasus to pull away from the other late starters, Neil Thompson in his smart new Cornish Shrimper and Peter Guest in his Hunter, out for the first time this year. John and Richard gradually overhauled the rest of the fleet on every leg to finish as worthy winners. Altogether a good sail in about 8 knots of wind.
Sue Harding was fastest on the water but the handicaps are now having an effect on the earlier series leaders and after those calculations she only finished in fourth place whilst Colin Brown was 5th.The final results were 1st John Easterby, 2nd David Hansford and 3rd Raymond Harle with John Wales in a Hunter.
