September 17

The final race of the season in the POETS Island Race Series at Ullswater Yacht Club took place on Friday, September 17. The eight competitors got off to a prompt start in the cruiser race at about 1.30pm and stayed together in the brisk wind, cross tacking on the upwind leg to Glenridding.
In the Birkett Crag area of the lake this orderly state of affairs took a dramatic turn when Wayne Gorrie, helming Barrie Cheetham's Ruffian for the first time this year, fell out of his boat! He had been leaning against the wire guardrail which snapped. All Barrie Cheetham saw was a pair of feet disappearing over the side. Wayne came to the surface still holding on the tiller extension and the first everyone else knew was the sight of him swimming after his boat which had carried on down the lake. Fortunately other competitors were nearby and Wayne climbed aboard another boat and was transferred back to the Ruffian. Much to his credit Wayne, although soaking wet, carried on with the race but finished some distance behind the others.
Colin Brown in his Beneteau, Noah's Ark, with Jo Laycock as crew took line honours and the other boats, although starting at different times in the ten minute starting window, finished within yards of each other.
After the handicap calculations, the results were 1st Colin Brown and Jo Laycock Beneteau, 2nd Raymond Harle and John Wales Hunter and 3rd Keith Hyde and Steve Jury Parker 21.
The final series positions will be announced at the POETS dinner and prize giving next month.
