POETS Prizegiving 2021
Ullswater Yacht Club's POETS (Push off Early Tomorrow's Saturday) Friday racing group held its Annual Dinner and Prizegiving at Penrith Golf Club on Friday, October 15.
UYC POETS Laureate John Easterby reviewed the racing year. He said it was a year of contrasts as far as weather conditions were concerned with winds varying from almost nothing to nearly gale force. As a result, although the full 13 Points races were completed it was only possible to complete four of the six Island races because of the weather the first time for many years that this has happened. The POETS awards were presented by John and his wife Lesley. They complimented all who had taken part in these, the most well-supported cruiser events of 2021 at UYC.
The three finalists in the four Island series races were:
1. Colin Brown and various crews in a Beneteau 21.7, 6 points~
2. John Easterby and Richard Sealby in a Pegasus, 7 points
3. Ray Harle and John Wales in a Hunter Europa, 10 points.
In the POETS Points series there were 13 races, but factors such as very little wind on many Fridays, or too strong a wind, meant that it was a challenge to sail them all and meant being quite flexible on organising the series this year. All who had taken part particularly the solo sailors were complimented. It was a very closely-fought series. Nine boats qualified with six results out of a total record entry of 26 cruisers during the year. As is so often the case, the series results were determined by the results in the final race.
The three finalists in the 13 Points series races were:
1. Sue Harding and various crew, in a Sonata,13 points
2. John Easterby and Richard Sealby in a Pegasus, 13 points
3. Ray Harle and John Wales, in a Hunter Europa,13 points.
The final results depended upon who scored the best results to make up 13 points.
The evening concluded with a fine rendition of 'The Lambton Worm' by Harry Patrick on the keyboard and other contributions of poetry from those gathered.
