There was no racing last week (June 10) owing to strong winds. Friday, June 17, brought record temperatures to the rest of the country but Ullswater was again covered in cloud with the threat of strong winds. As it turned out there was rain and variable light winds, just enough to hold the two races needed to make up for the race lost last week when even the sheep were clinging to the grass!
Ten boats turned out and the course for race one was Club-Sharrow-Bonscale-Lodge-Club, 2 laps. Colin Brown and David Kitchen in their Beneteau 21 got off to a prompt start and stayed at the front for the entire race. Stephen Mills racing his Hunter Horizon for the first time also began well but fell behind when a jib sheet came off the sail. The other competitors maintained their starting positions for the duration of the race.
After handicap calculations the results were: 1st David Hansford and Derek Pierce, Pegasus, 2nd Barrie Cheetham and Wayne Gorrie, Ruffian, 3rd Colin Brown, Beneteau21.
Race 2 was held in the top part of the lake and the course was Club-Brunskill-Floshgate-Lodge-Club, 2 laps. The wind picked up a little which enabled some of the backmarkers to catch up and as the handicaps had been adjusted to take account of performance in the first race so the final positions were dramatically different. Three of the bottom four in race one were in the top four in race 2. Just shows, perseverance often pays dividends.
Results race 2: 1st Peter Guest, Hunter, 2nd Raymond Harle and John Wales, Hunter, 3rd David Hansford and Derek Pierce, Pegasus
