Abbott Lodge, at Clifton, near Penrith, is a working dairy farm set in spectacular scenery of the Eden Valley midway between the Pennines and the Northern Lake District. Steven and Claire Bland took on the tenancy of the Lowther Estate farm in February 2000, attracted by the farm’s excellent grass growing ability. They were milking 140 black and white cows until foot and mouth struck the following year.
The Blands restocked their farm with Jersey cattle in February 2002. Given the opportunity to make radical changes following foot and mouth, the Blands decided not to re-stock with black and whites but to go for pedigree Jerseys instead – and add value to the product by making and selling their own ice cream off the farm.
Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream
Abbott Lodge produce more than 40 flavours of ice cream made from the milk from their pedigree Jersey cows. Choose from the 16 flavour display cabinet in the converted gin case tea room. Ice cream cakes and chocolate coated bombs are also available to order. Ice cream is also available at the award winning Rheged visitor attraction near Penrith and at Granny Dowbekin’s Tea Rooms in Pooley Bridge.
Abbott Lodge Tea Room
Former calf pens (a former gin case – a circular horse engine house) on the farm have been converted for the ice cream making area and tea room. You can relax there and enjoy a choice of delicious ice cream, teas, coffees, soft drinks and traybakes. Responsible dog owners are welcome, although dogs are not allowed in the tea room they are welcome onsite (note all grass areas are used for playing and must not be used for dogs to relieve themselves, go for a walk offsite along the miles of grass verges please).
Things to do at Abbott Lodge
Kids just love it at Abbott Lodge. Apart from the obvious attraction of the ice cream, they can play in an outdoor play area including a ride-on tractor circuit for children under eight. And if the weather's a bit wet, there is an indoor play area to keep the kids entertained!
