Ladies Who Launch – Still wondering what they get up to?
We are a group of women ready and keen for our fifth season. The idea behind it is for the ladies who have spent years supporting children and partners in our club to have their opportunity to enjoy the sport of sailing. Ladies Who Launch is for all women who want a bit of support to get on the water. It is also for ladies who are experienced, including those with racing experience, to support others and at the same time improve sailing skills themselves. The important thing has been to listen to what the UYC ladies want, to provide the encouragement and support for them to go out and do it. Led by ladies, for ladies.
We don’t all turn up for every session, life has a habit of getting in the way, but we turn up when we can. There is no pressure during the sessions, the whole point is to be sociable, enjoyable and fun. Some are quite happy watching and learning from the support boat, yet at the same time others who can already sail but want to improve techniques and again others to gain confidence to simply enjoy going out for a sail. We are very fortunate to have the loan of the UYC Sailing School’s boats, Laser Stratos, Bahias and Picos which we have used on occasions, but most ladies have their own boats. A lot of ladies have also really enjoyed taking part in the supportive start racing series which follows in the afternoon.
The last session of 2016 was held during the club's highly successful I am Team GB Day and the 'ladies' were delighted to be part of the event held to celebrate Team GB's success at the Rio Olympics.. The final session was concluded by the passing over of the beautiful brass Endeavour Trophy presented by Julie Archer (RYA dinghy instructor) to Karen Smith for her commitment and dedication.
So if you feel this is something you would like to get involved with, please join us at one of our meetings, just turn up in the club at 10am ready changed in sailing gear on the Saturdays listed in the sailing programme and on the home page of this website. The first session is on Saturday, April 29.
