Ladies Who Launch final session

Ladies Who Launch final session

Throughout 2018, women club members have taken part in nine informal Saturday morning sessions aimed at getting them on the water with no pressure. All ages and levels of experience, they enjoy sailing together with friendly support and encouragement. With Storm Callum raging, the morning was very wet and wild, but there was still a good turnout and the sailors spent the last session of the season reviewing the achievements of the year and making plans for 2019 while enjoying a delicious range of home made cakes. The session was rounded off with presentation of the annual Ladies who Launch Trophy to newcomer to the group, Catherine Mulholland.
“Catherine is a new member who has come along to almost all of the sessions, been out sailing and racing whenever the weather permitted and volunteered to help with running the sessions too”, said one of the group’s organisers Karen Smith. “We felt that she embodied the spirit of Ladies Who Launch which is all about sharing our enjoyment of sailing and supporting women to get out on the water in safe and supportive environment.”
Karen also paid tribute to the work other members had done to ensure the success of the group including experienced racer and coach Anne Noble who led the sailing side of the 2018 sessions. “She is a great role model for women sailors and we really appreciate her giving her time and expertise so generously. Also Pam Brooks has been quietly working away at welcoming new members, Kathryn Potter organised our lovely LWL clothing and Julie Archer donated the trophy.”
Catherine, who sails an RS400 with her husband Chris and a single-handed Solo, was delighted to be presented with the trophy. “You have welcomed me to the group with open arms,” she said. “Any ladies out there thinking about joining please do, I highly recommend it. I’m already looking forward to next year.”
Catherine and Chris are newcomers to Cumbria. She explained: “Having longed to live in the hills for years, our retirement plan was to be near mountains and within 30 minutes’ drive of a good sailing club. Ullswater fitted the bill, so we upped sticks from Wiltshire and here we are, with absolutely no regrets. We have sailed at various clubs over the years and UYC has exceeded our expectations not only in terms of the location but the friendly atmosphere both on and off the water.”
The group is already planning for 2019 with a Ladies Who Launch lunch in April and regular sessions throughout the season.
The Ladies Who Launch group is proud to be part of Active Cumbria’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign which was launched by Sport England to encourage women to take part in sports activities. And the group has been so successful that similar men-only sessions, Blokes In a Boat, have been set up.
