Regional Junior Championships at UYC Sept 29 & 30

Regional Junior Championships at UYC Sept 29 & 30

Up to 100 junior sailors from all over the North aged up to 16, will be taking part in the event which offers something for all and is one of nine regional championships being held across the UK over the same weekend.
“We are proud to have been selected to run this brand new event and will be delighted to welcome youngsters from all over the North to sail on our beautiful lake,” said the UYC event organiser David Clarke.
The event replaces the former RYA Zone Championships and will provide a broader format to encourage more young sailors to take part.
The Championship Fleet is aimed at all sailors in local clubs under the age of 16 who are racing in the RYA classes (Optimist, Topper, RS Tera and RS Feva XL). It is a great first time event for club sailors, giving them the opportunity to get a feel of a championship atmosphere.
There is also Coached Regatta Racing where novice racers can join in and experience the racing under the supervision of a coach at a larger event.
For newcomers to sailing, there is also an OnBoard Fun Fleet aimed at the under 13 age group where there will be ‘games with aims’ sessions.
Sam Usher, RYA Regional Development Officer, said: “It will be a great introduction to big events for new or inexperienced sailors while at the same time offering competitive fleet racing for junior sailors in BYS-recognised classes, including those who want to apply for a place in the 2018-19 RYA Zone Squads.”
He added that with the introduction of an OnBoard fleet for the first time, the event would bring together junior sailors of all abilities from across the region.
“The OnBoard fleet activity will be full of on-the-water games with the core focus of improving skills and sailors enjoying their time on the water.
"With activities to help progress young sailors no matter what their skill level is, it will be a fantastic opportunity for them to get out there and sail with kids from other clubs and experience the thrill of sailing at a big event.”
For UYC it will be a busy weekend on and off the water with the competitors accompanied by their families and friends on the site.
“It is a huge undertaking for the club and we will rely heavily on all our volunteers to make it work. We are very grateful to these club members who will be giving up their own time to enable us to host this prestigious event,” said David Clarke.
UYC is keen to encourage junior racing and one of the high points of the sailing calendar is the annual Sail Camp, when the youngsters of the club spend a week learning to sail or improving their techniques. Many of this year’s Sail Campers will be taking part in the new-look Junior Championships.
