Travelling racers fly the flag

The UYC members compete regularly at the club but also have been testing their skills by racing at a range of events elsewhere including world and national championships. This year, the racing sailors have been to five world championships, six national championships and dozens of class open events all over the UK and in Europe. They have travelled abroad to race at two venues in France, St Raphael on the Mediterranean and Carnac in Brittany, Majorca and Lake Garda in Italy. In this country, they have been to Cowes on the Isle of Wight, Pwllheli and Bala in Wales, Dalgety Bay, Loch Lomond and North Berwick in Scotland and other clubs across England. The travelling classes from the club include VX One, Tempest, Musto Skiff, SB20, 29er, RS200, Flying Fifteen, International Canoe and Laser and more than 30 club sailors have put their boats on trailers and hit the road.

The busiest club traveller is UYC Sailing Secretary Julie Archer who, when she finishes all her events at the end of October, will have raced at nine different venues, including two trips abroad, to France and Italy. Julie races in the single-handed RS Aero Class and has already taken part in the World and British National Championships as well as Northern Travellers events all over the region. Coming up are the Aerocup at Lake Garda and the Aero Inlands at Northampton.

She calls herself a LILS – ‘Late In Life to Sailing’ having taken it up in her forties. “I never imagined that I would ever be at a world championship but the journey there has been some of the most fun sailing I have ever had,” she said. Her commitment and enthusiasm was recently recognised at the RS Aero Class Awards in September when she received the RS Aero Lady of the Year Award. “I was delighted and proud to receive the award – recognition for contributing to the sport and that it’s not all about winning, it’s the taking part that matters,” she added.

Other successful travelling sailors include:
Jono Shelley and his crew who won the VX One Gold Cup at Lake Garda in Italy, as well as the Musto Skiff Scottish Nationals at Dalgety Bay and he was 17th in the Musto Skiff World in Majorca.
Martin Boatman and his crew were 10th out of 81 boats at the SB20 Worlds at Cowes.
Dave Chandler and his crew won the VX One Nationals at Sunderland.
John Robson was 3rd in his class at the International Canoe Worlds at Pwllheli in Wales, Charlie Chandler was 5th in his class at the same event and Colin Bell was 10th.

And despite the pressures of school work and exams, our youths and juniors have also done us proud. Megan Thornley, 18, James Abbatt, 14, Robert Richardson, 16, Isabel Abbatt, 16, and Sophie Cogger, 17 have travelled widely in this country all year racing in 29ers, RS200s and a Laser Radial.

Sailing secretary Julie Archer added: “Well done to all our travelling sailors. I am sure that, like me, they have all really enjoyed the experience and they have also helped to raise the profile of UYC as a 'happening' club at home and abroad."
