Laia and Aggie's first bullet

Laia and Aggie's first bullet

They crewed together in a Topper helmed by their dad Graham in race two of the Preservation Society Trophy on Monday, August 28. The all class handicap two-race event is traditionally held on August Bank Holiday Monday and a total of 14 boats from a range of different classes took part.

Despite strong gusting winds and a long course which stretched from the club to a buoy in the centre of the lake round the corner on the way to Howtown and back, the girls were keen to jump into their Topper for the afternoon’s dinghy race. With Laia sitting on the deck, Aggie in the bottom of the boat and Graham on the helm they joined the start line and held their own in the racing fleet. There were some capsizes among the racing dinghies as the wind strengthened, but the Topper got round the course safely with the girls waving to the other competitors as they sailed along.

The high performance boats did more laps than the slower boats but when the corrected time was calculated, the Priestleys were delighted to find out that they had taken first place. The girls are the fourth generation of their family to become members at Ullswater Yacht Club and their dad Graham has raced a range of dinghies nationally and internationally. The overall dinghy winners of the event, counting a first and a third, were Matty and James Lyons in a 49er. Robin Stanley and Marion Marshall won the cruiser event in a Beneteau.

On Saturday and Sunday, it was Fleet Weekend at UYC with separate starts for fast and slow handicap boats, sailing five races, and cruisers sailing three. By far the biggest fleet was the slow handicap with 27 boats on the start line. The overall winners were Joe Pester and Emma Allsopp in a Laser 3000, with three firsts; Matty and James Lyons also took three firsts to win the fast handicap fleet and the cruiser winners were Robin Stanley and Marion Marshall in a Beneteau.
