Sail Camp, July 30 - August 4 2017

Sail Camp, July 30 - August 4 2017

Run entirely by volunteers, Sail Camp has been held every year for more than 30 years and has become a ‘must-do’ event for the club’s young sailors. They spend the week taking part in the Royal Yachting Association course relevant to their age and ability – from beginners to assistant instructors.

They are taught by fully qualified RYA instructors, most of them ex-Sail Campers themselves who have learned at the club and gone on to teach others. The instruction is led by Sailing Development Officer, 22-year-old Edmund Clarke who grew up at the club, attending Sail Camp, qualifying as an instructor, then a senior instructor and making a career out of teaching sailing.

“I always looked forward to Sail Camp when I was younger, everyone has such a good time, and it is great to be looking after the water side this year,” said Edmund.

The course is fully residential, making use of the club campsite for overnight accommodation, and catering is provided by parent volunteers working in the kitchen. As well as sailing instruction during the day, the youngsters also take part in a full programme of activities, trips and expeditions.

Sail Camp ends on Friday, August 4 and is followed by three weeks of ‘Learn to sail with us’ RYA courses, open to non-members of all ages. Choose a three-day basic Level 1 course or come for five days and take Level 1 & 2. The courses will be held for three weeks from Monday, August 7 with Level 1 Monday to Wednesday and Level 2 on Thursdays and Fridays. There will be two groups for all courses, children (aged up to 16) and adults.
