POETS celebrate 25th anniversary

POETS celebrate 25th anniversary

More than 50 past and present members of the POETS group who meet to sail every Friday got together in the clubhouse on April 21 for an anniversary tea. They were joined by their oldest member, 100-year-old Joyce Tones who was part of the group with her late husband Max.

The POETS (Push Off Early Tomorrow’s Saturday) enjoy racing in a relaxed atmosphere on a Friday afternoon and their informal sessions have become increasingly popular. Last year a total of 20 boats were involved and there were more than 30 members out on the water. This year the first POETS race of the season is on Friday, April 28.

Organiser John Easterby explained: “Our racing format is quite different from the traditional in that there is no mass start, no race box timing, and the boat handicap varies from race to race. There are 10 minutes in which to start and the competitors time themselves from start to finish. The courses are set to have long legs and to have a variety in points of sailing to make the races both interesting and challenging.”

John said he was pleased to see so many POETS taking part in the celebration, the first of several events to be held throughout 2017. The anniversary cake was cut by UYC Commodore Peter Lewis and Joyce Tones.
