Looking for somewhere to sail in the Lake District?  Look no further than Ullswater, one of the most stunning lakes in the UK. We are located at the northern part of this seven-mile lake and, being only 10 minutes from the M6, we are the most accessible. Whether it's an introduction to sailing, RYA training, or competitive racing you're after, we have it all. And if you are a member of UYC you can camp for free in the club grounds.

ULLSWATER YACHT CLUB HOSTS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Youngsters from a wide area of the country met at Ullswater Yacht Club at the weekend to take part in the RYA Volvo West Zone Championships. The venue for this much coveted event was selected by the RYA.  Eighty seven boats took part in the two day event including Toppers, Mirrors, Fevas and Optimists, all crewed by youngsters under 16 years of age.

Fleet Winners were:-

Topper - Dan Venables from Sutton Sailing Club
Mirror - Matthew and Benjamin Lulham-Robinson from Otley Sailing Club
Optimist - Bobby Hewitt from Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club
Feva - Crispin Beaumont and Nick Wilson from Bartley Green Sailing Club

Best placed UYC boats were April Whiteley and Phillip Brooks who came 9th out of 15 Mirrors and Edmund Clarke who came 20th out of 47 sailing his Topper.

Commodore of UYC Roy Hulse was thanked by the RYA representatives for hosting such a successful event.

CLUBHOUSE REOPENS

It was with much relief that our clubhouse reopened on Saturday 11th September.  Despite severe damage following the floods last November the club opened for the 2010 season on time, even though it was pretty tough using the temporary facilities.
 
However, last weekend the sun shone, sailors were out in force on the water and everyone was full of praise for our new-look clubhouse.

UYC attends the International Canoe Nationals

Ullswater members enjoyed a superb event at Portland Sailing Academy over the August Bank Holiday weekend when Weymouth hosted the International Canoe Nationals. The results were healthy if not spectacular with John Robson in 4th, Colin Brown (the defending Champ) 8th and Felicity Robson 11th.  There were 25 asymmetric canoes competing under generally blue skies with races held over 4 days. Winds ranged from 10 to a challenging 22 knots. Worth noting that the Winner Gareth Caldwell and second placed Charlie Chandler are both regular UYC visitors.

UYC HOST YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT

Over 70 boats are expected to take part in the RYA Volvo West Zone Championships at UYC
over the weekend of 25-26th September 2010.

Competitors are all under 16 yrs and will sailing in Optimists, Toppers, Fevas and Mirrors.

OPENING OF CLUBHOUSE

On Saturday 18th September the club will be holding two events to celebrate the re-opening of the clubhouse.  In the afternoon between 3pm and 4pm a free light tea will be available for members.

Sail for Gold Regatta

Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy recently hosted the Sail for Gold Regatta.
975 sailors from 57 nations took part in the event during the first week in August, including current Olympic champions Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy, Andrew Simpson and Paul Goodison.
