Topper Northern Championships on 14th and 15th June

Topper North-west Championships, Ullswater Yacht Club, June 14 and 15

TOPPER sailors Thomas Wallwark and Stephanie Wingeatt battled it out all weekend at the North-west Championships at Ullswater Yacth Club on June 14 and 15.

It was a first place in the final race that clinched it for Thomas, from Redesmere Sailing Club, who won the six race event with Stephanie, of Leigh and Lowton SC, coming second.

A total of 28 young sailors from all over the region took part in the event on a weekend with challenging light weather conditions. Despite the light winds, race officer Rick Boyce managed to get in three races on a simple triangular course on Saturday. With two firsts and a third, Stephanie Wingeatt was the overnight leader.

Sunday brought more light winds and in search of the breeze, the race office moved the course to the Northern end of the lake. Thomas Wallwark won race four, putting the two leaders on equal points. In race five, Joe Baker of Royal Windermere Yacht Club upset the rankings by taking first place with Sam Platt of Bolton S C second and Jack Staniland of Redesmere SC, third.

After the lunch break, the race officer was hoping to get in two races but with the fickle easterly breeze failing to improve, race six turned out to be the final race of the day. The race was the event winner for Thomas, George Graham of Burwain SC was second and Jack Staniland third. Stephanie had to count a fourth in her results total and so took second place overall.

RYA coach David Clarke, spent the weekend giving on-the-water advice to some of the less experienced youngsters and he said he was very impressed with the way all the competitors coped with the difficult conditions.

“The winds were tricky and frustrating on both days and they all managed extremely well. I was so pleased to see that they all seemed to be enjoying themselves,” he said.

 Results:

1.     Thomas Wallwark, Redesmere SC, 8

2       Stephanie Wingeatt, Leigh & Lowton SC, 11

3       Jack Staniland, Redesmere SC, 19

10 June 2014 (707 reads)

Dozens of visitors took to the water for the first time at Ullswater Yacht Club's annual Open Day on Saturday, June 7.

Despite a poor weather forecast, the club was busy with lots of activities on and off the water. Newcomers were taken out for a sail on a range of different boats, from cruisers to dinghies, and the predicted very heavy rainstorms failed to arrive.
